Which GEO platform to target first: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews

GEO resources are always scarce. You can't maintain a presence on every AI platform. Instead of concentrating on the most popular platform, use two variables: audience traffic share and ease of influence. These determine which platform deserves limited budget first. In practice, the platform to prioritize first is usually not the largest one.

GEO resources are always scarce. You can't maintain a presence across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Copilot simultaneously, particularly with a content team of just two or three people. The real question isn't whether to do GEO, but which platform deserves your effort this month.

Instinct suggests starting with the hottest platform. That's usually wrong.

GEO platform prioritization: two axes, not hype

Platform priority comes down to two variables. The first is your audience traffic share: which AI platforms your target customers actually use for questions. The second is ease of influence: how quickly your content can get cited with equivalent effort. Map these two variables against each other and you have a real priority order, not an endless to-do list no one finishes.

Most focus on the first variable alone. They see ChatGPT has the most weekly active users and commit all resources there. The issue is that many ChatGPT answers rely on the model's internal training knowledge. The system doesn't necessarily fetch webpages in real-time or include source attribution. Your carefully written pages might not appear at all. If they do appear, they might lack credit. Largest traffic pool doesn't guarantee you'll be cited.

Real differences between three platforms

Three main platforms lead the space. These difficulty scores come from our field testing, where 1 means easiest to cite and fastest results, and 3 means slowest.

PlatformAudience Profile & TrafficCitation MechanismEase of InfluenceTime to Results
PerplexitySmaller volume, but users are active researchers, comparers, and B2B decision-makersNearly every answer fetches webpages in real-time with numbered source links1 (Low)2 to 4 weeks
Google AI OverviewsLargest volume, covers general search trafficBuilds answers from search index and high-authority pages, overlaps traditional SEO2 (Medium)1 to 3 months
ChatGPTLargest weekly active user base, but mixed query intent and lower commercial intent ratioPartial real-time fetching (search-triggered), mostly relies on training knowledge3 (High)3+ months, unstable

The comparison shows which platform deserves priority.

Why we prioritize Perplexity first

Start with Perplexity if resources are constrained. Not because it has the most traffic, but because it has the best return on effort. Perplexity's answer structure is fixed: fetch webpages, summarize, attach numbered sources. If your content is clear, structured well, and directly answers the question, you're far more likely to get cited than on other platforms. A B2B manufacturer we worked with rewrote six product spec pages into Q&A format and added clear comparison tables. Within three weeks, those pages appeared as sources in Perplexity results. Identical content sent to ChatGPT didn't surface for two months, and even then only occasionally.

Perplexity's audience leans B2B. Users typically research, compare vendors, and write reports. These are people who often become customers. The audience is smaller, but each impression carries more weight.

Google AI Overviews ranks second, but don't treat it as its own project

Google AI Overviews is the second priority. It has the largest volume and overlaps significantly with existing SEO, creating both opportunity and constraint. Opportunity: you're not starting from zero. High-authority pages with good structure get excerpted into Overviews more easily. Constraint: it depends on years of accumulated domain authority that can't be forced this month. Don't treat it as a separate project. Instead, integrate it into your existing SEO updates. While updating those pages, reformat key content into Q&A structures suitable for excerpting and complete your schema markup. This generates additional value from work already underway.

ChatGPT last, but not because it's not important

Ranking ChatGPT last typically draws skepticism. It's undeniably the largest platform. But size doesn't mean ease of influence. Commercial query volume is relatively low, the citation mechanism is opaque and unreliable, and single pages rarely move the needle. A better sequence: once your content gets widely cited on Perplexity and across other websites, that visibility increases your chances in the next model training cycle and in real-time fetches. Prioritize the first two platforms, and ChatGPT visibility tends to follow as a consequence.

The sequence is straightforward: start with platforms offering transparent citation mechanisms and fast feedback. Once you build traction there, expand to larger platforms with slower payoff. Build certainty first, then scale.

This ranking isn't universal. For pure B2C businesses with lower transaction values targeting mass-market audiences, AI Overviews might rank higher. If your audience doesn't use Perplexity, adjust that variable. The framework's real value lies in forcing you to identify where your customers actually are and where you can realistically gain traction before spending.

Before creating content, measure those two variables. Correct prioritization means the same budget produces AI citations roughly a month faster.
