What is GEO? Seven fundamental differences between generative engine optimization and traditional SEO

Your website ranks first on Google, but ChatGPT never mentions your domain. This is the new problem GEO solves. Search is shifting from a page of links to a synthesized answer, and whether you appear in that answer is now largely separate from SEO rankings. Here is a one-sentence definition plus a comparison table showing seven fundamental differences between GEO and traditional SEO.

One-sentence definition (citable as-is): GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means optimizing so that generative AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews directly reference and quote your content in their answers. Instead of chasing ranking position, you aim to become the source an AI engine cites when answering questions.

A B2B client, established for over a decade in their field, asked us a direct question: "Our main keywords rank first on Google. Why does ChatGPT never mention us?"

We tested it. Same questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. The answers cited two competitor firms and Wikipedia. The client appeared zero times. Their website traffic stayed the same. Their rankings stayed the same. On this new front of AI answering questions, they were invisible.

This is what GEO addresses. Search is moving from a list of links to a synthesized answer. Whether you appear in that answer has little connection to SEO rankings. It is a separate variable to optimize.

What exactly is GEO optimizing?

Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking: getting your page to first position so users click through. GEO optimizes for extraction and citation: making an LLM grab your content when answering questions, trust what you say, and list you as the source.

On paper this sounds minor, but the mechanics differ completely. SEO brings users to your site. GEO often does not. They read the synthesized answer and see your brand in the citation, or they do not. No click, but influence nonetheless. This shifts how most people need to think about visibility.

Seven fundamental differences between GEO and traditional SEO

The final three rows are where most organizations go wrong. Focus there if you can only retain three.

Content structure: extractable sentences

In the SEO era, we learned to bury key points in supporting detail and build gradually to conclusions. AI models extract differently. They need clean structure and standalone assertions: one sentence that says what something is, who it is for, and what problem it solves.

For GEO, write definitions, numbers, and conclusions so they stand alone when quoted. This article's opening sentence follows that principle: it can be quoted intact without context and still make sense. More facts, fewer vague words means higher odds of citation.

Authority signals: from backlinks to semantic consensus

Traditional SEO proves authority through backlinks. GEO relies more on semantic consensus: when multiple trusted sources describe your brand and domain the same way, LLMs recognize you as reliable in that field.

This means how you describe yourself on your site is just the start. What industry media, Q&A communities, and third-party reviews say about you also shapes how models understand you. GEO overlaps more with brand and PR than with pure website technique.

Does SEO still matter?

GEO is not a replacement for SEO. For AI to cite your pages, they need to be crawlable, indexable, and fast. SEO is the foundation. GEO is built on top of it.

What changes is what you measure. Rankings and traffic still matter. Add one more metric: when ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions in your domain, what percentage cite you? Track this AI mention rate.

We did not tell the first client to rebuild their site. Instead we built a monitoring system: submit core questions to mainstream AI engines, track which sources they cite and how, note whether the client appears. With that baseline, they knew which definitions to add and which talking points to articulate consistently across third-party channels. Three months later, citations for domain-specific queries went from zero to regular mentions. This is how we approach Front-Line Deployed Marketing at Tenten: first make sure your brand appears and is correctly cited in AI answers, then focus on conversions. Polished demos prove nothing. What matters is consistent citations with real people as a result.
